ABUJA, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- A total of 30 Boko Haram fighters were killed in a clash with troops in Nigeria's northeastern state of Borno over the weekend, a local official said on Monday.
Saeed Salisu Sambo, head of Gwoza local district in Borno State, told Xinhua the terrorists met their Waterloo in the hand of Nigerian troops when they attempted to ambush a convoy of local officials who were traveling from an area known as Pulka to Maiduguri, the state capital, early Saturday.
He said the Boko Haram fighters detonated an Improvised Explosive Device and followed with sporadic gun shots which was repelled by the Nigerian troops. The gun fight took place along the state's Bama road, according to the district official.
"The troops pursued and dealt with the armed attackers with military precision," he added.
The Borno State has been a stronghold of the extremist group Boko Haram and has been frequently raided in the past six years. In past months, the Nigerian government has launched several military operations to eliminate the terrorist threat.
Boko Haram, which seeks to impose strict Islamic law in northern Nigeria, has been blamed for some 20,000 deaths and displacement of more than 2.6 million people since 2009.
