LONDON, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Britain's Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson gave his reaction Saturday to the death of Cuba's leader Fidel Castro.

In a statement issued in London through the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Johnson said: "The UK expresses its condolences to the government and people of Cuba, and to the former president's family."

"Fidel Castro's leadership of the 1959 Cuban Revolution marked him out as an historic if controversial figure. The UK will continue to work with the government of Cuba on a wide range of foreign policy priorities."

Fidel Castro died late Friday at the age of 90. He led the 1959 Cuban revolution that overthrew Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. Fidel Castro had led Cuba for nearly half a century before stepping down in 2006 for health reasons. He was succeeded by his brother Raul Castro.
