YANGON, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar will implement an upgrading program for the country's livestock and fishery sector in cooperation with European Union (EU) and German state-owned organization GIZ, according to the ministry of agriculture, livestock and irrigation of Myanmar Friday.
U Khin Maung Maw, a director general from Myanmar's fishery department and Dr. Pefra Schill, country director of GIZ in Myanmar, signed the agreement recently in Nay Pyi Taw for implementing the program.
The five-year program named as Myanmar Sustainable Aquaculture Program (MYSAP) will begin from this year to 2022 and the EU and GIZ will fund about 22.5 million euros for the program.
The main objective of the program is not only to help Myanmar for manufacturing value-added fishery products to be exported to EU market but also to enhance the livestock sector for increased income, local food coverage and creating job opportunities.
The total foreign direct investment in the country's livestock and fisheries sector amounted 546.698 million U.S. dollars as of October in this fiscal year 2016-2017 since late 1988.
