JALALABAD, Afghanistan, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- The ongoing Afghan insurgency and violent incidents including mortar fire and bomb blasts have claimed six lives including two innocent children and injured 15 others in the eastern Nangarhar and the neighboring Laghman provinces since Thursday, officials said Friday.

In the latest aggressive attack, the armed militants detonated a remote-controlled bomb next to the residence of a senior police official in Jalalabad city the capital of the eastern Nangarhar province Friday morning killing him and a child and injuring six more children, some in critical condition.

"The blast occurred behind the gate of the house of a police official Abdul Hakim who was in charge of detention center in Nangarhar province at around 10:50 a.m. local time today killing him along with a child and injuring six more children," provincial administration spokesman Attaullah Khogiani told Xinhua.

Three more police also sustained injures as a sticky bomb targeted their van in Jalalabad city on Friday, police said.

A similar attack against police in the neighboring Laghman province Friday morning claimed the life of police personnel after a police vehicle ran over a mine planted by Taliban militants on a road in the restive Dawlat Shah district.

Taliban militants, according to local officials, also fired a mortar on a village in Ali Negar district of Laghman province Thursday night, which slammed on a wedding party killing a seven-year-old girl, and injuring seven others including three children, an act denounced by locals as a crime against innocent civilians.

Meantime, two hardliner militants were killed as their explosive device went off prematurely in Ghani Khil district of Nangarhar province on Thursday evening, local officials said.

Taliban militants who have intensified activities since mid April, according to local analysts, would do their best to gain more grounds and consolidate their positions ahead of snowfall and chilly winter in the mountainous Afghanistan.
