BUCHAREST, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- The veterinary authority of Romania on Wednesday announced there would be very careful checks of all poultry shipments from countries with bird flu outbreaks, in an effort to prevent the spread of the disease in its territory.

The National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) made the move following information received from the European Commission and alert notifications from the World Organization for Animal Health on the epidemiological situation within the European Union, according to a press release from the authority.

The extra measures included the monitoring of European trade, checking all poultry shipments coming from epidemic countries and informing relevant veterinarian officials and practitioners, as well as economic agents on the current epidemiological situation.

ANSVSA also ordered that all Romanian poultry be caged and recommended all citizens announce any illness or death of household animals as soon as possible.

In March 2015, bird flu was confirmed in Romania after more than 100 dead pelicans were found in Danube Delta.

So far, Hungary, Switzerland, Denmark, Croatia, Germany, the Netherlands and Austria have notified Brussels about outbreaks of bird flu on their territory.
