Indian legendary musician Balamurali dies

NEW DELHI, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Legendary Indian musician M. Balamurali Krishna, popularly known as "God's Own Voice", has died at the age of 86.

Balamurali, who delighted millions for over four decades, passed away at a private hospital in the southern Indian city of Chennai Tuesday after a prolonged illness, his family members said.

As a recipient of Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honour in 1991, he was a renowned singer and composer of Carnatic music, a classical style from India's southern states.

Not only was he known for his melodious voice, Balamurali had also dabbled in acting and produced several songs for southern Indian films.

Born in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, Balamurali was considered a child prodigy, who performed his first public concert at the age of six.

Indian Information and Broadcasting Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu has said that "nobody can fill the void" left by the singer's death. "My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family," he added.
