SUVA, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Fiji's national carrier Fiji Airways will be leasing five new Boeing 737 MAX 8 airplanes to replace its aging Boeing 737 fleet, the government-owned Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) said Wednesday.

Two Boeing 737 MAX 8 airplanes are expected to be delivered in 2018, while the remaining three will be flying over in 2019.

The leasing of the five new airliners will cost 500 million U.S. dollars over 12 years, with financing arrangements.

Andre Viljoen, Fiji Airways' chief executive officer and managing director said the deal is a groundbreaking package offering the best possible outcome.

"Investing in these upgraded narrow body fleet, the Boeing 737 MAX 8, with its cabin noise reduction, enhanced interiors, better lighting and more overhead cabin space is one way we continue to reinforce our commitment to customer service," Viljoen said.

Fiji Airways sealed the deal Tuesday after seven months of negotiations with Airbus and Boeing.
