YANGON, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- A group of unidentified people, suspected of attackers, attempted to gather outside a border guard police post in Maungtaw, western Rakhine state, Tuesday mid-night, forcing police to open fire on them, according to the Information Committee of the State Counselor's Office Wednesday.

One of the people died with wound in chest and the police later conducted a clearance operation, the sources said.

Some 10 suspicious villagers were also detained in Buthidaung township in the state on the same day.

The authorities have earlier claimed that 35 suspects involved in Oct. 9 violent attacks on three border posts in Maungtaw have been arrested.

They were rounded up when the government troops conducted an area clearance operation in Wetpyin, Aung Mingalar and Yetwinkyun villages in Maungtaw last week.

A series of attacks occurred after nine policemen and five soldiers were killed by armed men on Oct. 9 on three border posts in Kyikanpyin of Maungtaw, Kotankauk of Rathedaung and Ngakhuya Office.

Extremists were exposed as being involved in the attacks, which were supported financially by foreign terrorist organizations, the government said.

A dusk-to-dawn curfew has been imposed on Maungtaw since Oct. 10.
