CANBERRA, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Australian government continues to put into place measures both locally and regionally to ensure Australians remain protected from the threat of terrorism, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told Parliament on Wednesday.

As the coalition-led fight against the Islamic State (IS) in the Middle East continues to ramp up, Turnbull said it was important that Australia be prepared for the inevitable influx of foreign fighters attempting to return "home."

He told Parliament that after having the nation's Counter-Terrorism Coordinator review the current terrorism state-of-play, Australia and its partners in the region were well prepared to deal with the fallout.

"Over the past decade, we have built closer diplomatic and security relationships with our neighbors, including Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore," Turnbull said.

"My government, alongside key partners in our region, is at the forefront of regional efforts to combat terrorism and counter the destructive narratives of violent Islamist extremism."

"No one country can fight terrorism on its own. Our law enforcement and security agencies have long been prepared for this challenge and are constantly monitoring for any shift in the threat environment ahead."

Turnbull said the review found that Australia could do more; the Counter-Terrorism Coordinator recommended the government put in place ways to further protect public spaces, as well as implement plans to identify and help those who may be "vulnerable to radicalization."

According to the government, Australia's National Terrorism Threat Level remains unchanged at "probable."
