Buenos Aires subway to become pet-friendly

Source: Xinhua   2016-11-19 11:07:20

BUENOS AIRES, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Starting this summer, four-legged residents of Argentina's capital Buenos Aires will be able to ride the subway too, local media reported Friday.

Lawmakers have unanimously approved a bill to allow passengers to bring along their furry friends on weekends and holidays, with a vote of 56 in favor, zero objections and four abstentions.

The details of the law and how it will be applied are to be published soon in a government gazette, state news agency Telam said, but Mayor Horacio Rodriguez Larreta was to make an official announcement Friday at the Las Heras station of the H Line.

The city is home to some 430,000 domestic dogs and 250,000 cats, said the agency, or "14 dogs for every 100 people and eight cats for every 100."

That could be why at least one resident reacted with alarm to the news of the new law.

"There's no room for people and we are going to allow animals?" Fernando Moron told Telam.

"There are times during rush hour in the subway when we ride like cattle. I think it's absolute lunacy to allow pets," Moron said.

Yet many others were thrilled. The mayor proposed the bill after first launching a poll that showed more than 70 percent of those surveyed were in favor of the measure.
