UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday called on developed countries to deliver on their pledge to mobilize 100 billion U.S. dollars per year by 2020 in support of climate action by developing countries.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Ban renewed his call for all countries and all sectors of society to redouble efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions after the UN Climate Change Conference in Marrakech, Morocco.
On Thursday, the Marrakech conference adopted a proclamation calling for the highest political commitment and solidarity to combat climate change and reaffirms continued strong support for the landmark Paris Agreement.
Ban said global cooperation rooted in strong national action is essential. "No country, irrespective of its size or strength, is immune from the impacts of climate change, and no country can afford to tackle the climate challenge alone."
The Paris Agreement, which requires universal action to limit the rise of global temperature within 2 degrees Celsius, has entered into force earlier this month.
As of today, 111 countries, accounting for more than 75 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, have ratified the agreement.
