Namibia extends gun amnesty to February

WINDHOEK, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- The three-month gun and ammunitions amnesty in Namibia that was initially supposed to have ended Friday has been extended to Feb. 18, 2017.

Namibian Police head of public relations Edwin Kanguanjivi announced this Thursday in Windhoek when he revealed that since Sept. 2 when the amnesty started, 925 firearms, 44, 000 ammunition and 66 explosives were surrendered.

Some of the firearms surrendered, according to the police, were brought in by owners including museums that no longer want them.

Others were surrendered by people who had inherited them from family members, while a number of them were received from people who got the firearms and ammunitions from the previous government.

The statement said 237 people came forward to surrender the illegal guns and ammunition. Of this number, 81 were owners; 72 had inherited them; 47 got the firearms from the previous government; 18 were picked up in the bushes; 16 were found on a farm, while two belonged to collectors and one came from a hunter.
