WASHINGTON, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States need to identify common ground, remain consistent and be creative in developing relations, Chinese Ambassador Cui Tiankai said here Wednesday.

Cui made the appeal at the screening of a film about late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping's U.S. visit in 1979, "Mr. Deng goes to Washington."

China and the United States must show the world that they can sidestep the Thucydides Trap, a situation where a rising power causes fear in an established power which escalates toward war.

Over the years, China and the United States have established multiple channels for strategic communication. Those mechanisms should be continued despite the power transition in the White House, Cui said.

Cui's remarks were echoed by former U.S. national security advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski, who said China and the United States should remain in frequent contact with genuine openness and sincerity, in order to work through uncertainties in the world.

"The right time for doing so is now," he added.

Deng's trip was cited by both Cui and Brzezinski as an highlight moment in China-U.S. relations that's also inspirational for future interactions.
