SUVA, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Samoa's Police Commissioner Fuiavailiili Egon Keil has been detained in a police cell, leading local newspaper Samoa Observer reported Monday.

The incident happened when Fuiavailiili arrived at work Monday morning, after charges against him in relation to the wrongful arrest of a member of the public last year were dismissed last week.

A police officer, who is not authorized to speak to the media, confirmed Fuiavailiili's arrest. The officer could not provide details but said they are awaiting a registrar from the court to clear him so he could be released.

Nearly 40 Samoan police officers had earlier signed a petition expressing no-confidence in Fuiavailiili.
