DHAKA, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- A head-on collision between two trucks in Bangladesh's Bogra district, some 197 km northwest of Dhaka, left at least seven people including five policemen dead and six others injured early Sunday, a local police official said.

The Bogra district police official who did not like to be named said, "at least four passengers were killed on the spot and seven sustained injuries in the head-on collision between the two trucks."

He said three more passengers have later succumbed to injuries sustained in the fatal crash.

According to the official, a truck carrying the policemen going to Dhaka to bring some goods, collided with another fertilizer-laden truck at around 1:00 a.m. local time.

The cause for the accident is not immediately available, said the official.

Bangladesh has one of the highest fatality rates for road accidents in the world due mainly to shoddy highways, poorly maintained vehicles, violation of traffic rules and lack of monitoring of the traffic department.

Thousands of people are killed in road accidents in Bangladesh every year, and many of the fatalities occur in rural areas.
