5.8-magnitude quake strikes off Japan's Miyagi prefecture

TOKYO, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 jolted the northeast coast of Japan at 6:43 a.m. local time on Saturday, but no tsunami warning was issued, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The temblor was centered in waters offshore of northeastern Miyagi prefecture, which borders the Pacific Ocean and is to the northeast of the nation's capital city of Tokyo.

The weather agency said the epicenter of the quake was at a latitude of 38.5 degrees north and a longitude of 141.6 degrees east and occurred at depth of 60 km.

The earthquake logged 4 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale which peaks at 7 in part of northeastern Miyagi prefecture and 3 in some other areas.

So far no major damage or injuries were reported.
