BEIJING, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- Heads of international organizations and world leaders have congratulated Donald Trump on being elected U.S. president, eyeing cooperation with the United States.
Republican presidential nominee Trump, 70, won Tuesday's presidential election in the United States and is set to succeed Democratic Barack Obama as the next U.S. president.
"We extend our sincere congratulations on your election as the 45th President of the United States of America," said European Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in a joint letter released Wednesday.
The two chiefs also invited Trump to visit Europe for a European Union (EU)-U.S. summit, with a view to charting the course of transatlantic relations for the next four years.
"Today, it is more important than ever to strengthen transatlantic relations. Only by cooperating closely can the EU and the U.S. continue to make a difference when dealing with unprecedented challenges," added the letter.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Wednesday that he was looking forward to working with Trump and that U.S. leadership is vital to the military alliance.
Stoltenberg said that "it is important that the trans-Atlantic bond remains strong" and that "U.S. leadership is as important as ever."
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday congratulated Trump on becoming U.S. president-elect, and said he hoped they could work together to boost China-U.S. relations so as to better benefit peoples around the world.
In his congratulatory message, Xi said that while China is the world's largest developing country and the United States the largest developed power, both, as the world's top economies, bear the special responsibility of maintaining world peace and stability and boosting global development and prosperity, and share extensive interests.
To develop a long-term, healthy and stable China-U.S. relationship is in line with the fundamental interests of the peoples of the two countries as well as the general expectations of the global community, Xi said.
"I highly value the relations between China and the United States, and I am looking forward to working together with you to expand China-U.S. cooperation in every field, at the bilateral, regional and global levels, on the basis of the principles of non-conflict, non-confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, with differences controlled in a constructive manner, so as to push China-U.S. relations further forward from a new starting point, better benefiting the peoples of the two countries and other countries," Xi said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia is ready to restore full-fledged relations with the United States after Trump's victory in the presidential election.
In a telegram to Trump, Putin "expressed his hope for joint work aimed at steering Russia-U.S. relations out of the crisis, as well as solving pressing issues on the international agenda and searching for efficient responses to global security challenges," the Kremlin said in a statement.
Putin also expressed confidence that building a constructive dialogue between Moscow and Washington based on principles of equality, mutual respect and real consideration of each other's positions would meet the interests of peoples of both countries and the world community.
Meanwhile, French President Francois Hollande warned Wednesday that Trump's victory in the U.S. election "opens a period of uncertainty."
Next to France maintaining its global role, "this context calls for a united Europe, capable of making itself heard and of promoting policies wherever its interests or its values are challenged," Hollande said.
British Prime Minister Theresa May, in a statement issued by Downing Street, congratulated Trump on being elected the next president of the United States.
"Britain and the United States have an enduring and special relationship based on the values of freedom, democracy and enterprise. We are, and will remain, strong and close partners on trade, security and defense," May said.
"I look forward to working with President-elect Donald Trump, building on these ties to ensure the security and prosperity of our nations in the years ahead," she said.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has offered Trump "close cooperation" on the basis of shared trans-Atlantic values.
"Germany and America are connected by values: democracy, freedom, respect for the law and for the dignity of human beings, independently of origin, skin color, religion, gender, sexual orientation or political views," Merkel told reporters in Berlin on Wednesday.
"On the basis of these values, I am offering the future president of the United States of America, Donald Trump, close cooperation," Merkel said, adding that the partnership with the United States "is a foundation stone of German foreign policy."
Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg and Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen also congratulated Trump and expressed their hopes for close ties with the United States.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has sent his "heartfelt congratulations" to Trump for his election as the next U.S. president.
Abe, in a statement, reminded Trump of the importance of the Asia-Pacific region, saying its peace and stability are "a driving force of the global economy" that also brings peace and prosperity to the United States.
Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said his country will work "as closely as ever" with the United States under Trump's new administration.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Trump in a message posted on Twitter, saying "we look forward to working with you closely to take India-U.S. bilateral ties to a new height."
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said he looks forward to working with the new American leader to further enhance Philippine-U.S.relations.
In the Arab world, a statement from the Egyptian presidency said that Egypt "now hopes that Donald Trump's presidency will breathe a new spirit into Egyptian-American relations."
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said in a statement that he "congratulates the elected American president, Donald Trump, and hopes that peace will be achieved during his term."
