HANOI, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Vietnam Red Cross Society (VRCS) on Tuesday signed a cooperation agreement to provide drinking water for children and families affected by drought and salt intrusion in Vietnam.

The UNICEF-sponsored project with a total budget of 125,000 U.S. dollars will be carried out from November 2016 to February 2017, focusing on improving access to drinking water and sanitary practice for 30,000 Vietnamese vulnerable people.

Those beneficiaries of the project included some 10,000 children and 15,000 women in six Vietnamese provinces of Binh Thuan and Ninh Thuan in the southeast region, Ben Tre and Soc Trang in the Mekong Delta, as well as Kon Tum and Gia Lai in the Central Highlands, said UNICEF Vietnam Acting Representative Jesper Moller at the reception ceremony held by the VRCS in capital Hanoi on Tuesday.

The project will also help enhance management capacity and capability of local officials while implementing initiatives towards restoring and strengthening resilience against drought and salt intrusion in the six target provinces, said the UNICEF.
