UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- A UN peacekeeper from Togo and two Malian civilians were killed Sunday in an attack in the Mopti region of Mali, a UN spokesman said in a statement.

Seven peacekeepers from the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) were injured in the attack, which occurred north of Douentza, in the Mopti region, said the statement.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the deadly attack "in the strongest terms" and called for the perpetrators of this attack to be brought to justice, it said. It was not immediately clear who were the attackers.

The MINUSMA, which was deployed in 2013 to support the political process and carry out security-related stabilization tasks, has become a frequent target of terrorist attacks in Mali.

The Malian government has been seeking to restore stability after a series of setbacks since early 2012, including a military coup, renewed fighting between government forces and Tuareg rebels, and the seizure of its northern territory by radical extremists.
