SYDNEY, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- An Australian man has reportedly used a bow and arrow to shoot an intruder who broke into his home at Sydney's west late Sunday evening.

New South Wales police in a statement on Monday said the a 68-year-old man and his wife were at their home in Wattle Grove when the intruder broke into their home at 17:20 local time on Sunday.

The thief had fleeced with the man's cash and almost ran away with the couple's vehicle, a Nissan X-Trail.

"As he started the car and attempted to reverse out of the garage the male resident armed himself with a compound bow and arrow and went to the garage, where he confronted the male," NSW police said.

"The offender got out of the car and jumped a fence into Wattle Grove Drive, running towards a parked Mazda Tribute."

"As he ran away, the male resident stood up on the fence and shot the fleeing man using the compound bow and arrow, hitting him in the buttocks or lower back area," the police statement said.

Police were called in a short time later and a crime scene was established which was examined by forensic specialists.

The bow and arrow and other items were seized by police as exhibits.

The thief still remains at large as inquiries at local hospitals have failed to locate anyone with injuries consistent with a bow and arrow strike.
