BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Brunei Times, Brunei's second largest news daily, said on Sunday that it will cease publication from Nov. 8.
The daily said in a statement on its front page that "This is to notify readers, our stakeholders and the public in general that the Brunei Times will cease media and publication operations. Tomorrow's (Nov. 7, 2016) edition will be its final."
The announcement did not give the reason for it, but Soh Lai Huat, deputy general manager of the daily, told Xinhua that it was a business decision.
"Today young generation in Brunei choose social media, not newspaper. They don't read heavy stuff like Asian news, world news and opinion pages," Soh said.
"If these pages are removed then it doesn't look like newspaper any more, and the cost to produce these daily pages are high."
Launched in July 2006, the Brunei Times has about 200 employees. It has a circulation of 10,000 copies and over 30,000 viewers of its online edition on a daily basis in Brunei, which has a population of 420,000.
