AU, Kuwait vow to further strengthen health sector partnership

ADDIS ABABA, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- The African Union (AU) and Kuwait have vowed to further strengthen bilateral cooperation, with special emphasis given to the health sector.

The two parties affirmed the need to strengthen health sector partnership in an event held on Tuesday to inaugurate a special medical project at the premises of AU equipped with modern medical equipment to serve AU's diplomatic community and representatives from AU member countries based in Addis Ababa.

"Anyone who helps you to improve your health is a true friend and a true partner," said Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, AU Commission Chairperson.

"The Project will go a long way in addressing and modernizing our health status and, therefore, contribute to the improvement of the health condition of our diplomatic community in Ethiopia," she added.

The Africa Union and Kuwait have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish an early warning system to support the African charter of disease control, an institution critical to building resilient and coordination across the continent to manage and prevent diseases.

According to the Chairperson, bilateral cooperation between AU member states and Kuwait have further focused on various partnership areas aligned with AU's Agenda 2063 that include scientific resilience, food security, trade and investment, and development of infrastructure.

Dr. Mohamed Abou Alhassan, Representative and special Adviser to the Emir of Kuwait, has also commended the partnership his country developed with the African Union in the health sector, saying that, "Africa is our interest in the medical domain".

He said the medical center will serve AU member state representatives based in Addis Ababa and AU staff.
