New jolt with 4.8-magnitude hits central Italy

ROME, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- One of the earthquake waves with 4.8-magnitude hit central Italy early on Thursday, adding more building damage to the latest earthquake-stricken areas.

According to ANSA news agency, the 4.8-magnitude aftershock took place in the province of Macerata at 1:35 a.m.local time on Thursday which was also felt in Rome.

The series of earthquakes started with 6.0-magnitude tremor on August 24, which killed 298 people in several towns in central Italy.

The same areas were struck again on October 26 with two quakes, one measuring 5.4 in magnitude and the other 5.9.

The latest strike came on Sunday with the 6.5-magnitude quake near Norcia in Umbria region, which was the strongest one in Italy since 1980.

The recent quakes in central areas of Italy have caused huge damage to many priceless artworks, Medieval churches and other public and private buildings while seriously hurting economic development in those areas.

The government's civil protection department said Wednesday it was "assisting" more than 26,000 people who suffered as homeless after the wave of the earthquakes.
