TOKYO, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi and Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida agreed on Thursday to cooperate on solving ethnic conflicts in the southeastern Asian country.

Suu Kyi, when talking about recent violence in Myanmar's northern Rakhine state, said that the situation there is extremely delicate and needs to be addressed with caution.

Kishida, for his part, said that Japan will offer a new passenger boat to Myanmar to support its efforts to ease tensions in Rakhine.

Tension has continued in Myanmar's Rakhine since conflicts broke out in 2012 between the majority Buddhist and minority Muslim populations there.

Aung San Suu Kyi is in Japan on a five-day visit from Tuesday. It was her first trip to Japan since her National League for Democracy assumed power this year.

Later in the day, she received an honorary doctorate in Japan's Kyoto University, where she had spent some time as a researcher between 1985 and 1986.

Aung San Suu Kyi is also expected to meet with Japan's Emperor and Empress and attend a press conference in Tokyo on Friday, according to Japan's foreign ministry.
