CAIRO, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- An Egyptian diplomat met here Thursday with a United States envoy on advancing a political solution to the crises gripping Libya, the Egyptian foreign ministry said.

Tariq Al-Qony, an assistant to the Egyptian foreign minister on Arab affairs, discussed latest developments in Libya with U.S. special envoy for Libya, Jonathan Winer, said a foreign ministry statement.

Winer is also scheduled to meet other Egyptian officials and Libyan figures, the statement added.

The U.S. diplomat expressed the interest to meet regularly with Egyptian officials to coordinate efforts on Libya.

Al-Qony said Egypt looks forward to achieving security and stability in Libya, considering the historical ties between both neighbors.

Libya has been suffering from conflicts since the downfall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi five years ago.

The country is now run by two parliaments and two governments in its east and west, despite United Nations-sponsored efforts to bring about a united government in the face of rising threats from Islamic State militants.
