JINAN, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Liao Yongyuan, former general manager of the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), stood on public trial Thursday for accepting bribes.

The Dezhou Intermediate People's Court in east China's Shandong Province handled the case, and the Dezhou People's Procuratorate charged Liao with helping others in business operation, promotions, and directly or indirectly accepting assets worth over 13.39 million yuan (1.98 million U.S. dollars) from 1997 to 2014.

Liao is also accused of holding property worth 21.03 million yuan with unidentified sources.

He held multiple positions in the CNPC before serving as assistant general manager, vice general manager and general manager of the company.

Liao and his lawyer questioned the evidence submitted by prosecutors.

In his final statement, Liao pleaded guilty and expressed his remorse.

Over 60 people, including Liao's relatives, lawmakers, journalists and others, attended the trial.

The court ruling will be announced at a later date.
