TOKYO, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe vowed on Wednesday to provide full support to Myanmar's new government.
"As a friend of Myanmar, Japan will give the new government our full support across the public and private sectors," Abe said when meeting with Myanmar's State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi.
Abe said Japan will provide about 800 billion yen (7.73 billion U.S. dollars) over five years to aid the nation-building in Myanmar.
Suu Kyi, who is on a five-day visit to Japan from Tuesday, said she believed that Japan will walk alongside her country as a good friend and trusted partner as Myanmar is writing a new page in its history.
After the meeting, both countries signed an agreement on a framework for the dispatch of a group of Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers to Myanmar.
This is Suu Kyi's first visit to Japan after her National League for Democracy party assumed power in April. She last visited Japan in 2013 as an opposition member of parliament.
