COLOMBO, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka on Wednesday cleared environment concerns over a Chinese funded port city project in the capital.
Members of an Environmental Monitoring Committee (EMC) appointed by Sri Lanka's Coast Conservation Department (CCD) to oversee the environmental compliance of the Colombo port city project made an inspection tour at the project site.
The EMC team which comprised of representatives from 20 Sri Lankan government agencies including the Ministry of Fisheries, Ministry of Environment and Navy expressed their satisfaction of the project's compliance.
They concluded that the reclamation and construction work for the project is being carried out according to conditions outlined in a development permit issued by the CCD.
Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Yi Xianliang had on Tuesday dismissed concerns over the impact to the environment as a result of the project.
The project was initiated by China and the former Sri Lankan government and involved constructing a large extent of land at sea in the capital.
The new Sri Lankan government which took office last year suspended the project over several concerns, but gave the green-light under a new agreement to resume the project recently.
