LONDON, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- British Prime Minister Theresa May Thursday welcomed an announcement by Japanese car maker Nissan that it is to build new models at its plan in Sunderland.
As well as protecting thousands of jobs in England's northeast, the decision will be seen as a boost for Britain's post-Brexit ambitions.
The news came just hours after the announcement that the British economy grew 0.5 percent in the the quarter after the June 23 referendum decision to quit the EU.
There had been fears major industries would consider leaving or reducing activities in Britain in the event of a hard Brexit. Commentators immediately said the Nissan decision will strengthen Britain's stance for its tough Brexit negotiations with Brussels.
Most of the vehicles built at the plant are exported, many to Europe.
May said in a statement from 10 Downing Street: "The government will continue to work closely with employers and investors in creating a global Britain, a country where there are new opportunities for jobs and rewarding careers."
