WINDHOEK, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- An African Union (AU) delegation handed over a cheque worth 100,000 U.S. dollars to the Namibia government during a courtesy call to Namibia's Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila on Thursday in the capital Windhoek.
The delegation is undertaking a humanitarian assessment mission that started from Oct. 23 and ends on Friday.
Ambassador Lamine Yahiaoui, permanent representative of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic to the African Union, said their mission is to assess how the drought situation affected Namibia and they also want to show solidarity with Namibia.
"Collectively we need to contribute to save lives and we hope this will contribute to the aid that Namibia so much needs," he added.
Namibia's Prime Minister said that Namibia highly values and appreciates the initiative of the African Union to support fellow member states currently undergoing humanitarian emergencies.
"The donation will go a long way in addressing the gaps in our humanitarian response," she added.
The Prime minister added that the drought in Namibia has affected 729,314 people and the bulk of that figure live in the rural areas and are in need of direct food assistance.
