RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- NEw statistics from Brazil's Institute of Public Security show that almost 4,000 people have been killed by police in the state of Rio de Janeiro between January 2010 and August 2016.
Published by the G1 news site, these statistics paint a chilling picture of the reality of Brazil's most popular tourist destination.
In this period, 3,985 people have been killed by police. From January to August 2016, 544 people were killed by police, an 18 percent rise year-on-year.
2016 looks set to pass 2015, during which 644 such deaths were registered. That made it the worst year since 2010, the first year such records were tracked, when 855 deaths were counted.
Most of the deaths, termed as "acts of resistance", happen in the state capital of Rio de Janeiro and the 2016 Olympic host city. From January to August, police killed 283 people, 24 percent more than last year.
The rampant violence of Brazilian police is regularly denounced by NGOs and civil organizations.
