Vietnam, Singapore emphasize economic, security ties

HANOI, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam and Singapore stressed here Wednesday the importance of the bilateral ties in trade-economics and security-defense.

The remark was made at talks between Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh and Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan who is visiting Vietnam from Tuesday to Thursday.

According to the officials, economic-trade cooperation continues to be highlighted in the Vietnam-Singapore bilateral relations.

Singapore remains among Vietnam's top investment and trading partners over the past years, said Minh, adding that the bilateral trade revenue hit 9.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2015.

Vietnamese and Singaporean officials also highlighted strong, effective and practical development of security-defense ties in areas of anti-terrorism, cyber security, maritime security, and submarine rescue among others, reported Vietnamese government's e-Portal on Wednesday.

Singapore committed to strengthening training assistance and increasing Vietnamese law enforcement forces' capacity in crime prevention and combating, especially in the fight against terrorists.

The visiting Singaporean official said he would boost relevant authorities of his country to initiate discussion and soon sign a labor cooperation deal between two governments.

On the occasion, Minh and Balakrishnan inked a deal on research cooperation and research program for high-level officials of the Communist Party of Vietnam during 2017-2019 period.

On the same day, the Singaporean guest paid a courtesy call on Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.
