Israeli soldier injured by drive-by shooting near Lebanon border

Source: Xinhua   2016-10-26 19:09:53

JERUSALEM, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- A man driving a car in Lebanon opened fire at Israeli forces near the border with Israel, wounding a soldier, said the Israeli military in a statement on Wednesday.

"Shots were fired from a passing vehicle in Lebanon at Israeli Defense Forces," the statement read, slightly wounding a soldier in his hand.

According to the military, the forces were on "routine activity in the area of Ramin Ridge," near the border, when the assault occurred.

In retaliation, Israeli forces "responded with fire towards the vehicle," read the statement, adding that "a hit was confirmed."

The identity of the shooter remains unknown.

The incident comes a day after a 15-year-old boy from the Bedouin town of Lakiyah in the Negev desert was shot and killed by Egyptian forces near the border with Egypt.

The victim, Nimr Abu Amar, was at the border with his relatives who were hired by a subcontractor of Israel's Ministry of Defense to carry out maintenance work at the border fence.

Israel's last military campaign in southern Lebanon ended in 2006 with a fragile truce.

Since then, Israel allegedly assassinated several Hezbollah leaders, the Shiite organization controlling southern Lebanon, with three Lebanese soldiers and two Israeli soldiers killed in two separate border incidents.
