Malta's unemployment rate hits 37-year low

VALLETTA, Oct.25 (Xinhua) -- The number of unemployed people in Malta was reduced to 3,207 in September, reaching a 37-year low, Maltese government confirmed on Tuesday.

Compared to the figure in September last year and March 2013, the number of unemployed people in Malta was reduced by 1,717 people and 4,143, respectively.

According to the government, the number of jobless people in the country has been halved since the Labour Party won the election in March 2013.

The government said the reduction in unemployment was particularly felt among the younger generation. In the past 12 months, the number of young people looking for jobs was reduced by 261.

There were also significant reductions in the number of people registering for work aged 45 years and above. According to the government, the number of people in the age group looking for jobs falls by about half, or 1,450 since March 2013.

Statistics also indicate improved employment rate for the disabled and people at risk of social exclusion. The government attributes progress in the sphere to better enforcement of laws to protect those people and seek their benefits.
