LUSAKA, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- One police officer was killed while two others were injured in Lusaka, the Zambian capital, when another police officer shot at them after mistaking them for criminals, a police spokesperson said on Tuesday.

One of the injured police officers is in a critical condition and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at a hospital in the city.

Esther Mwata-Katongo said the incident happened on Tuesday morning on the outskirts of the city at a police barrier when four police officers from eastern Zambia's Chipata town were coming to the Zambian capital to arrest a criminal.

She said the police officer manning the barrier received a call from a member of the public that there was a group of heavily armed criminals coming to the city, prompting the officer to close the barrier.

"When the police officers from Chipata reached the barrier and found it closed, one officer Detective Sergeant Moyo disembarked from the vehicle with a view of finding out whether there were officers at the point and when there was no response, he went to open the barrier and it was at that point that the police officer stationed at the point opened fire shooting Sergeant Kapolyo in the chest mistaking the officers to be criminals he was earlier alerted about, "she said in a statement.

She said the officer fired another shot which grazed another police officer in the neck and then hit the driver in the neck who died on the spot.
