MOGADISHU, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Suspected Al-Shabaab militants killed a senior Somali security official in the capital of Mogadishu on Monday evening, a government spokesman said Tuesday.

Abdikamil Moalim Shukri, a spokesman for the Ministry of Internal Security, told reporters that "gunmen armed with pistols" shot dead Abdiaziz Araye, an official from the National Intelligence Agency, in Waberi district and then escaped from the scene.

Security forces are pursuing the perpetrators, Shukri said.

The incident happened barely one day after a suicide car bombing killed at least two people and injured four others in Mogadishu.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the assassination, but Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab has carried out frequent attacks on government and civilian targets in Somalia.
