YANGON, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- The local authorities of Myanmar's Yangon region will stop using groundwater as water supply in 2025, said an official of Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) on Monday.
Although the local water distribution system of Yangon region depends on surface water and groundwater, the groundwater resource is descending with the low rainfall.
The authorities are seeking new water resources to meet the local water demand, which is expected to reach 525 million gallons with a population of 8.5 million in 2040.
At present, water supply stands at 205 million gallons, of which 16 million gallons are groundwater. The supply is believed to meet the demand.
The authorities are making efforts to reduce the use of groundwater by closing old wells in the region and ban drilling new wells.
Yangon stands as the most populated region of the country with a population of 7.36 million, according to the country's 2014 census.
