SINGAPORE, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's Energy Market Authority, national water agency Public Utilities Board, and Singapore Power on Monday jointly issued a call for the development of smart metering solutions for electricity, gas and water supply to consumers.

Singapore's Minister for Trade and Industry (Industry) S Iswaran made the announcement on Monday during the opening ceremony of the ninth Singapore International Energy Week.

Currently, most of the electricity, gas and water meters in Singapore are cumulative meters, which are read once every two months manually.

The call for proposals invited interested parties to develop and trial smart solutions for remotely reading all three meters reliably and cost-effectively.

The trial also includes the development of a mobile application, which can provide consumers with timely and useful information on their electricity, water and gas consumption via their personal mobile devices such as cell phones and tablets. This will enhance consumers' awareness of their consumption patterns.

S Iswaran said the call for proposal provides an opportunity for the industry to offer an innovative and integrated solution that can enhance productivity and allow consumers to make informed decisions on their consumption and conservation of utilities.

"The results of the test-bed will help us assess whether and how we can deploy advanced metering solutions nation-wide, in tandem with our plans to have full retail competition in the electricity market by 2018," said S Iswaran.
