DHAKA, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) --The two-day National Council meeting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's ruling Bangladesh Awami League began Saturday with key policy makers holding discussions on further strengthening the country's biggest political party and building a hunger and poverty-free Bangladesh by 2021.
Prime Minister Hasina is chairing the meeting attended by some 20,000 guests and delegates including over 6,500 councilors from across the country.
A large number of foreign dignitaries also joined the opening session of the council which is expected to elect the next batch of leaders at its exclusive second session on Sunday.
Hasina inaugurated the 20th National Council of Bangladesh Awami League, which steered Bangladesh independence in 1971, at Dhaka's lash green Suhrawardy Udyan (garden) at about 10:15 a.m. local time Saturday
"Bangladesh is speeding fast in super development highway - now it's to hold our head high" is the theme of the council of Awami League which was formed on Jun 23, 1949 at Rose Garden in the old part of Dhaka.
