ABUJA, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- The plan of Nigeria to erect artificial demarcation poles on its boundary with Niger is not aimed at causing disunity among people of the two nations, a Nigerian official said Friday.
Muhammad Bose, who heads the National Boundary Commission, said the decision was made mainly to symbolize mutual understanding and promote unity, peace, cultural and economic development between the two countries.
According to him, artificial demarcation poles will be erected on the Nigerian side soon and authorities of the two countries have agreed to further provide basic social amenities to promote peaceful living among people in the border towns.
People of Nigeria and Niger living along the borderline have shared common historical affiliations, including social-economic background, religion, tradition and culture.
The official said since the artificial boundaries created among African countries by colonialists did not divide them, this, too, will not divide but strengthen co-existence among people of Nigeria and Niger. Enditem
