Two suicide bombers attack anti-IS leader in Iraq's Salahudin

Source: Xinhua   2016-10-21 20:02:50

TIKRIT, Iraq, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Two suicide bombers on Friday struck the house of a leader of anti-IS group at a town in Salahudin province in central Iraq, killing three people and wounding 15 others, a provincial security source told Xinhua.

The attack took place in the morning when two suicide bombers blew their explosive vests at the house of Sheikh Adnan al-Bazi, the leader of government-backed paramilitary Sunni tribal fighters, in the town of Mutasim, some 100 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, the source said on condition of anonymity.

The guards of the group's leader clashed with the attackers who managed to enter the house and detonated themselves, leaving three people killed and 15 others wounded, including Bazi himself and some of his family members, the source said.

The security forces sealed off the scene and imposed curfew in the town, as ambulances evacuated the victims to the town's hospital, the source added.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Islamic State (IS) militant group, in most cases, is responsible for the suicide attacks, targeting government officials and security forces, as well as crowded areas, including markets, cafes and mosques across Iraq.

The attack occurred as the IS militants carried out multiple attacks on the security headquarters and some government buildings in the northern city of Kirkuk and a nearby power planet, leaving at least 24 people killed and dozens wounded.

The attacks in Mutasim and Kirkuk came as the Iraqi security forces backed by anti-IS international coalition are carrying out a major offensive to drive out the IS militants from its last major stronghold in and around the city of Mosul in northern Iraq.
