KATHMANDU, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- More than 1,000 Hindus from across the globe have gathered in Nepal on Thursday to participate in the International Grand Hindu Conference.

The three-day event, being held in Pashupatinath temple, the holiest shrine of Hindu Lord Shiva, was inaugurated by Nepalese Former King Gyanendra Shah.

The event organized by the World Hindu Federation also gathered saints, high priests, Vedic scholars, Hindu campaigners and religious intellectuals from various countries.

Addressing the gathering of Hindus, former King Shah said Hindus are synonyms to peace and harmony, mentioning that Hindu is not only an identity but tool that binds society with nation and enhance unity, national integrity and sovereignty.

"Himalaya is a holy land as we are enriched by religion, culture and diversity. Nepal is renowned across the globe for same but we need to protect ourselves from hovering clouds upon Hindu religion and culture. We already have a direction and we just need a new idea to walk ahead," the last Nepali Shah ruler said.
