LONDON, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- British Prime Minister Theresa May's latest move to delay the final decision on the Heathrow airport expansion project has been well received by the country's largest airport.
Heathrow's chief executive John Holland-Kaye told media on Thursday that the prime minister was "showing leadership" in her approach to the long-delayed decision.
His comment came days after the government said that it could be at least a year before British member of parliaments vote on the controversial issue to allow for a full debate.
It was also believed by media that the British government would announce its preference next week, six years after the expansion was originally cancelled by the coalition government.
A record of over 57 million passengers used the airport located in west London over the first nine months of its financial year.
Some British officials have expressed concerns about congestion from Heathrow, supporting a massive expansion plan. But the plan was criticized by environmental campaigners citing reasons of increased CO2 emission.
