MOSCOW, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- The crew from the mobile short-range ballistic missile system Iskander-M have conducted tactical exercises at the firing field of Luga in Russia's Western Military District, authorities said Thursday.

"The group ran many kilometers, practiced deploying the Iskander-M and loaded missiles with the help of transport-loading vehicles," said the press office of the Western Military District.

According to the District, over 100 servicemen and over 20 pieces of equipment were involved in the training.

During the drills, the abilities of the commanders to make independent decisions in different situations was also checked.

In December 2013, Russia said it has deployed Iskander-M missiles along the borders with NATO countries. The missiles deployed are said to have a range of 400 kilometers, which do not fall under a category of the middle-range missiles banned by the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty between Moscow and Washington.
