KABUL, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- One soldier of the U.S. troops and one U.S. civilian died as a result of wounds sustained after an attack near a NATO base in Kabul, capital of Afghanistan on Wednesday, the U.S. Forces-Afghanistan confirmed.
"Another U.S. service member and two U.S. civilians also sustained wounds and are currently stable," it said in a statement.
"Anytime we lose a member of our team, it is deeply painful," General John W. Nicholson, Commander of U.S. Forces-Afghanistan and NATO-led Resolute Support mission, was quoted in the statement as saying.
"Our sympathies go out to the families, loved ones, and the units of those involved in this incident," he said.
The two individuals were killed during an attack near a coalition base by an unknown assailant, who was later killed.
They were conducting duties as part of the larger NATO mission to Train, Advise, and Assist the Afghan security services.
Earlier media reports here said a shooter wearing Afghan security forces'uniform attacked the base in Kabul incurring the casualties, citing an Afghan military official.
An investigation is being conducted to determine the exact circumstances of the event, the statement noted.
The shooting was the latest in a string of the so-called green-on-blue attack when members of Afghan security forces or gunmen in their uniform turn their guns against the foreign forces.
In May this year, two Romanian soldiers of the RS were killed when two gunmen in Afghan army uniform fired on them in the southern Afghan province of Helmand.
