TOKYO, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened mixed on Wednesday as the yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar held a rise in U.S. shares in check.

As of 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 12.72 points, or 0.07 percent, from Tuesday to 16,976.33.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile shed 0.15 point, or 0.01 percent, to 1,356.42.

Notable early gainers included fishery, agriculture and forestry and precision instrument issues. But those that lost ground were led by mining and insurance-linked stocks.
