JAKARTA, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's parliament will discuss and expectedly approve the Paris Agreement on climate change bill at the plenary session Wednesday, moving the country to real actions in fighting emissions.
Forestry and Environmental Minister Siti Nurbaya on Tuesday welcomed the parliament committee's decision to submit the bill into the upcoming plenary session.
She expected the plenary session would enact law on the nation's ratification on Paris Agreement, reached at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Paris in December last year.
Indonesia signed the Paris Agreement in April this year.
"Indonesia will get a lot of benefits from the ratification of Paris Agreement on Climate Change. It would further boost the country's commitment in creating sustainable development with low emissions," the minister said in a statement.
Indonesia's carbon emissions now stand at 760 billion metric tons, almost par with those of Brazil, the world's third-largest emitter, according to data from World Resources Institute.
Indonesia has initially set the target of cutting emissions by 29 percent with its own efforts and 41 percent with foreign assistance by 2020.
The country now plans to revise the emission reduction target to 41 percent by 2030 and will submit that to the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change scheduled in Marrakech, Morocco in November this year.
