Rose Gottemoeller takes office as NATO deputy chief

BRUSSELS, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- NATO on Monday declared that Rose Gottemoeller from the United States took office as deputy secretary general, becoming the first woman to hold this post.

Gottemoeller replaces Alexander Vershbow of the United States, who took up the position in 2012.

Gottemoeller has served as U.S. Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security, advising the U.S. Secretary of State on arms control, non-proliferation and political-military affairs.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg decided to appoint Gottemoeller as the next deputy secretary general in June.
