MOMBASA, Kenya, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Kenya on Friday announced the deployment of more troops along the Kenya-Somalia border to deal with the Islamic State (IS) and Al-Shabaab threats in the country.

Chief of Defence Forces General Samson Mwathethe said additional military personnel will be dispatched along the Mandera-Lamu border prone to terrorist attacks posed by the militants groups.

Speaking during the 5th Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) celebrations in the coastal city Mombasa, Mwathethe said the military has also established a border command center to boost surveillance.

He said the KDF, under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), has successfully managed to defeat the Al-Shabaab group in Somalia that had threatened to cripple the tourism sector by staging sporadic attacks in the Coastal region.

Defence Cabinet Secretary General Raychell Omamo said the KDF has managed to liberate over 20 towns that were under control of Al-Shabaab for the last four years since their deployment in Somalia in 2011.

Omamo paid tribute to the gallant soldiers who have paid the ultimate price for the defence of the Country.

The KDF day was set aside to show support for fallen soldier's families, honor those injured during operations and recognize AMISON peacekeeping efforts in Somalia.
