HONG KONG, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- An official from China's central government on Friday strongly condemned the three Hong Kong legislators-elect for their insulting oath taken on Wednesday.
The official from the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) told Xinhua that some legislators-elect, who overtly showed pro-"Hong Kong independence" banners while taking their oath, had seriously violated China's Constitution and the Hong Kong Basic Law.
Hong Kong's sixth Legislative Council (LegCo) started operation on Wednesday when all 70 legislators-elect took their oath to take office.
The three legislators-elect, however, deliberately used curse words insulting the Chinese nation and the country when reading the oath. Their oath was not accepted by the LegCo's oath supervisor.
The official said their behaviors had seriously hurt all the Chinese people at home and abroad including Hong Kong compatriots and challenged the indignity of the country.
The official said the central government had noticed that people from all walks of life in Hong Kong had expressed their strong indignation to those legislators-elect by issuing statements and staging protests.
This demonstrated that the Hong Kong society will not tolerate very few people's advocacy of "Hong Kong independence" and trampling on the rule of law, the official said.
The Hong Kong society will not tolerate their behaviors that could jeopardize the national security and Hong Kong's prosperity and stability, the official added.
